Oleh Makarenko

Defending Ukraine from Russian invaders, football player Oleh Makarenko was killed.

He was born on June 5, 1974, and lived in Bucha, Kyiv region. Since childhood, his heart has been filled with a love for football, which has accompanied him throughout his life. In 2003, together with his brother Viacheslav, he founded the “Bucha-03” football club in his hometown. The team participated in the competitions of Kyiv-Sviatoshynskyi district, won the championship of Bucha community and became the champions of the first district league in 2011. Oleh not only took care of the club, but also played as a defender all the time.

When the full-scale Russian invasion began, he voluntarily stood up to defend his hometown, which was almost immediately occupied. He helped people in the occupied town, informed them about what was happening around them, and took an active part in the de-occupation of the Kyiv region. Later, in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, he fought in hot spots on the northeastern and southeastern fronts. On November 28, 2023, 49-year-old Oleh Makarenko, along with his comrades-in-arms, came under enemy fire near Bakhmut. Trying to evacuate his comrades, he sustained injuries, which were incompatible with life…
