Maxim Petrenko

Another irreplaceable loss for Ukrainian sports. On the frontlines, the renowned athlete, Ukrainian world champion in sport climbing, Maxim Petrenko, was killed. He was 46 years old. Defending the freedom and independence of Ukraine, he gave his life near Toretsk as a result of a mortar attack by the occupiers.

Maxim Petrenko was born in Luhansk in 1978. At the age of sixteen, he won the silver medal at the World Youth Climbing Championship in Germany. Two years later, in 1996, he claimed the gold in Moscow, repeating his success the following year at the youth championship in Austria. In 1997, at a tournament in the Czech Republic, Maxim became the holder of the European Youth Cup.

His greatest achievement in adult competitions came in 1999, when he earned the bronze medal at the World Championship in Birmingham. At that time, Petrenko became the first Ukrainian to win a medal at a World Championship in sport climbing, in the difficulty climbing discipline. This title remains his to this day.

In addition to participating in international competitions, Maxim actively conquered rocks in Ukraine’s Crimea and throughout Europe, completing routes up to the 8c+ category.

The news of Maxim Petrenko’s death resonated on social media, where dozens of his fellow athletes and numerous climbing enthusiasts from around the world expressed their sorrow. In the comments, he was remembered as a sincere and cheerful person, a strong athlete and warrior who always gave his all to his chosen cause.

Maxim Petrenko’s death has left a deep wound not only in the hearts of his family and friends but also deeply saddened the entire sports community of Ukraine. He will forever be remembered as a talented athlete and an unwavering defender of his homeland.
