His name will forever be etched in the memory of Ukraine’s sporting community—a name of a warrior and an athlete who gave his life for Ukraine. Oleh Melnychuk fell in battle on May 15, 2024, defending his homeland against the invaders.
A native of Rivne region, a graduate of the Rivne Regional Sports School of Olympic Reserve, and later the National University of Physical Education and Sport of Ukraine, Oleh dedicated his life to athletics. Even after retiring from professional sports, he remained an integral part of this great family, supporting young athletes and inspiring them with his example.
When war came to Ukraine, Oleh Melnychuk joined the defenders, volunteering for a special forces unit where he earned the call sign “Slon” (Elephant). Where endurance, strength, and resilience were needed—he was on the front lines.
On May 15, 2024, while holding back an enemy assault in the Donetsk sector, Oleh Melnychuk was killed in action. His body was recovered only days later—on the night of May 19–20.
The Ukrainian Athletics Federation called his loss a profound tragedy for the entire sporting community. “Our boys are falling, trading their running shoes for weapons, fighting for the very existence of the Ukrainian nation. Oleh was a sincere, kind, and true friend. Thank you for everything. We will not forget. We will avenge,” read a tribute post.
On May 24, 2024, his hometown of Dublyany bid farewell to its warrior. He will be remembered as a bright and genuine person, always ready to support and help others.
Eternal glory to the Hero!
