Petro Shukalovych

Petro Shukalovych — a decorated Ukrainian athlete and soldier — was killed in action fighting against Russian invaders. He was the national marathon champion, a Master of Sport in athletics, and a fighter of the 4th Rapid Response Brigade “Rubizh” named after Serhii Mykhalchuk of the National Guard of Ukraine.

From his school years, Petro dedicated himself to running. He began as a youth on the 1500- and 3000-meter tracks, later turning to marathons, trail races, and team relays. His achievements were well known on the athletic arenas of Lviv region and across the country’s race circuits. Representing the “Dynamo” sports club, he repeatedly won medals at national and international competitions.

Petro was a three-time winner of the “Mohrytsia Eco-Trail,” became Ukraine’s marathon champion, and took part in the prestigious RaceProject, where in 2024 he completed 16 relay segments — a personal feat against the backdrop of war, wounds, and exhaustion.

“My profession is to defend my homeland, but this war must be won not only at the front line. We can only do that by constantly reminding the world that it is still ongoing,” Petro said in one of his interviews.

He had been on the front since 2015 — weapon in hand, love in his heart, endurance in his blood. Twice wounded, each time he returned to his comrades. He went where it was hardest. His final battle took place in Donetsk region.

The Hero is survived by his wife, also a service member, and a young daughter to whom he passed on the most important legacy: a love for Ukraine measured not in words, but in actions. He ran until the very end. And it seems that his finish line is not an end, but a threshold — beyond which begins remembrance: living, inexhaustible, and strong, just like him.

Eternal glory. Eternal honor.
