Vasyl Zavadetskyi was an athlete, a warrior, and a hero. He was born in the heart of Prykarpattia, in the picturesque village of Holyn. Raised in a large and loving family, he stood out from childhood for his kindness, perseverance, and keen sense of justice — the compass that would guide him through life.
Vasyl never shied away from hard work. He studied at the Kryvyi Rih Mining and Beneficiation Technical College, worked in the mines, and later found employment abroad. Wherever life took him, he remained a bright soul who brought kindness to others. In his native village, he was known as a sincere and compassionate man who helped at the local church and devoted himself to charitable work.
Football and fishing were his passions — his way of finding both excitement and peace. The football field gave him the thrill of competition; the river offered him calm and balance.
Vasyl played for the youth sports school team in Kalush and more than once became a regional football champion. Sports instilled in him a sense of teamwork, resilience, and the will to fight until the final whistle — qualities that would later define him on the battlefield.
When war shattered Ukraine’s peace on February 24, 2022, Vasyl went to the territorial recruitment center and, on May 9, was mobilized. He began his service in Zakarpattia as part of the Mukachevo Border Detachment named after the Heroes of the Carpathian Sich. Later, his unit was redeployed to the Zhytomyr region, guarding the border with Belarus. In the autumn, he was sent to Luhansk — into the very heart of the fighting.
His comrades remembered him by his call sign, “Tadei.” They said he feared nothing and always led the way when decisive action was needed. One of his brothers-in-arms later told Vasyl’s daughter: “Your father was the best man I ever had the honor to serve with. He was a dreamer who always shared his hopes with us. And now I weep and pray that God takes him under His care.”
On November 16, 2022, near the village of Novovodiane in the Luhansk region, Vasyl and his comrades were ambushed by a Russian sabotage and reconnaissance group. In an uneven battle, he was fatally wounded, defending his homeland to the very end.
For his personal courage, selflessness, and loyalty to his military oath, Vasyl Zavadetskyi was posthumously awarded the Order “For Courage,” 3rd Class, by the Decree of the President of Ukraine on March 2, 2023. He was laid to rest in his native village of Holyn.
Eternal memory to the Hero.
