Ihor was born on December 17, 1987. His childhood and youth were closely tied to Lviv, where he studied at Lviv Lyceum No. 17 before continuing his education at the Lviv Professional College of Sports. Sport became an inseparable part of his life, forging his character and teaching him never to retreat in the face of adversity.
He was a Candidate for Master of Sport in water polo. Ihor represented his team in numerous competitions, earning medals and prize-winning finishes while gaining the respect of both teammates and opponents through his determination, sportsmanship, and perseverance.
In civilian life, Ihor worked as a baker for private enterprises. A hardworking, sincere, and open-hearted man, he brought warmth not only through the bread he baked but also through the kindness and generosity he showed to those around him. His family remembers him as a compassionate, dependable, courageous, and fearless man who was always approachable, friendly, and ready to lend a helping hand. He loved music and singing, enjoyed fishing and cooking, had a special affection for animals, and found genuine happiness in life’s simple pleasures.
In 2025, Ihor answered the call to defend Ukraine. He served as a rifleman and assistant grenade launcher operator in the 1st Assault Squad, 1st Assault Platoon, 3rd Assault Company, 1st Assault Battalion of the Battalion Tactical Group, 210th Separate Assault Regiment (Military Unit A4122).
On the Zaporizhzhia front, where each day was measured not in hours but in battles, he fulfilled his military duty with honor. The resilience forged through sport and his instinct for teamwork became defining qualities, enabling him to support his brothers-in-arms and stand shoulder to shoulder with them in defense of his homeland.
On May 21, 2026, near the village of Vozdvyzhivka in Zaporizhzhia Region’s Polohy District, Ihor Koval fought his final battle. He was only 38 years old.
He was laid to rest on June 5, 2026, at Holoskiv Cemetery in Lviv.
Ihor is survived by his wife, sister, grandmother, and a large extended family. To them, he will forever remain a devoted husband, a loving brother, and a cherished grandson. To Ukraine, he will always be remembered as one of the heroes whose sacrifice enables the nation to continue its fight for freedom.
