Dmytro Hubanov

More than six months of hopeful silence, but the long-awaited miracle did not happen. In the summer, Ukrainian rower Dmytro Hubanov was killed in Zaporizhzhia.

He was born on February 23, 1995, in Mykolaiv. There he studied at the local school № 16 and took up sport. Since childhood, he had attended the rowing section. The summer sun on the waterways with fresh breeze, and the feeling of absolute freedom that the boat gives, make the young athlete fall in love with rowing. Gradually, persistent training under the guidance of Valentyna Buravkova began to give results – Dmytro repeatedly climbed the podiums of the Ukrainian Championship, became a bronze medalist at the European Under-19 Championship and was a finalist at the World Under-23 Championship.

When the full-scale Russian invasion began, he was one of the first to defend Ukraine. He served in the National Guard of Ukraine and took part in fierce battles in eastern and southern Ukraine. On August 2, 2023, while performing a combat operation in Zaporizhzhia, his relatives lost contact with him. For the defender’s family, the long 7 months of silence were both torment and hope. Everyone believed that he was alive and would return home. But in early March 2024, all hopes crashed: it turned out that on August 3, 2023, Dmytro Hubanov was fighting his last battle… On March 8, friends, acquaintances and relatives, including Dmytro’s beloved wife Daria and their little daughter, bid farewell to the fallen Hero…
