Illia Kovalov

Sergeant of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Illia Kovalov, a 21-year-old soldier, modern pentathlete, and student of Zhytomyr State University, was killed defending Ukraine from the invaders. A hero, he gave his life protecting Ukrainian land, freedom, and the future.

His life was only just beginning… Illia Kovalov was born in Zhytomyr, graduated from local school No. 17 and the Zhytomyr Automobile and Road Vocational College, where he earned a degree in “Automotive Transport.” In 2022, he enrolled in Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University, majoring in Physical Education and Sports.

Sport was always the guiding force in the Hero’s life. His name was well known in athletic circles: strong, resilient, focused — he possessed a rare combination of qualities that make a young man a champion. From the age of nine, Illia trained in boxing and modern pentathlon. He became a Master of Sport of Ukraine in modern pentathlon and was boxing champion of Zhytomyr Region from 2020 to 2022, and modern pentathlon champion from 2019 to 2022.

In 2019, Illia Kovalov won a European medal in modern pentathlon and became a five-time national medalist between 2020 and 2022. In 2021, he claimed the championship title at the Open Championship of Moldova in modern pentathlon and was a three-time Ukrainian champion in 2021–2022. In 2024, at the Ukrainian Championship, he fulfilled the standards for Candidate Master of Sport of Ukraine in boxing.

In August 2024, Illia Kovalov joined one of the combat units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He was killed on May 19, 2025, during a combat mission in the Sumy region.

Illia had a bright mind, a kind heart, and an unbreakable spirit. He was known as sincere, warm-hearted, always focused on his goals. He had a gift for inspiring, uniting, and supporting others. He dreamed of starting a family, dedicating himself to developing sport and rebuilding his homeland. He made plans for the future, believed in Ukraine’s victory and in a happy life after the war. Sadly, he never had the chance to realize those dreams.

The farewell to the Warrior took place on May 21, 2025, in his hometown of Zhytomyr.

Blessed be the memory of the Hero.
