Warrior and athlete Kostyantyn Deneka, call sign “TITAN,” will forever remain forty years old. His life, full of strength, motion, and struggle, was cut short on 1 April 2023 while carrying out a combat mission in Bakhmut — a city that became a symbol of Ukraine’s unyielding resistance.
Born on 12 March 1983 in Dnipro, he graduated from the National Metallurgical Academy of Ukraine and the Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi State Pedagogical University, where he studied physical education. Sport was his calling: cycling, boxing, swimming, running, sailing, shooting, kettlebell lifting, wrestling, triathlon — in every discipline, he sought and found a challenge.
Cycling held a special place in Kostyantyn’s life. As a member of the Leader Citron Team, he won dozens of national races and was an athlete of the Ukrainian Cycling Federation. His competitors knew one thing: keeping pace with him was nearly impossible. “A powerful rider everyone feared,” friends from the cycling community recalled. Even during brief leaves from the front, he mounted his bike — in 2022, for instance, he took part in the “Bucha Race.”
His athletic character — perseverance, endurance, belief in his own strength — naturally transformed into the character of a warrior. From 2014, Kostyantyn defended his homeland against Russian aggression. In 2021, he initially decided to end his service, but at the beginning of 2022, when the enemy returned with a new war, the Hero volunteered again to join the military. This time, he served in one of the special units of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
Wherever it was toughest, Kostyantyn was there. He fought in the hottest battles, time and again proving that the name “TITAN” was not just a call sign, but the essence of his life. He defended his country on numerous fronts: Moshchun and Zavorichi in Kyiv region, Poltavka, Malynivka, Olhivske in Zaporizhzhia… Bakhmut in Donetsk region became his final line of defense, where his heart stopped forever. The Hero fell to shrapnel wounds during shelling.
For his courage and self-sacrifice, Kostyantyn was awarded the Silver Presidential Medal “For Military Service to Ukraine,” distinctions for “Participation in the Anti-Terrorist Operation,” “Combatant,” and the Order of Courage, III degree.
Yet perhaps his greatest victories were not medals or awards. They were his love for his wife, pride in his son Kostyantyn and daughter Elizabeth, the friendships he cherished, and the example he left for the entire sporting and military community.
On 9 April 2023, Kostyantyn Deneka was laid to rest in the Alley of Heroes at Berkovets Cemetery in Kyiv.
Eternal glory to the warrior. Rest in peace, champion.
