Oleksandr Hrechanyk

A coach from Lviv region, Oleksandr Hrechanyk, was killed in fierce battles with the occupiers.

He was born on 10 November 1977 in the town of Sambir, Lviv region. He studied at the local school № 7, after which he served in the army and was trained as a Navy Seal on Maiskyi Island. He graduated from V.O. Sukhomlynskyi Mykolaiv National University with a degree in Psychology. He held senior management positions, worked as a diver, rescuer, and coach in Lviv sport clubs, as he was a combat swimmer.

After the start of the full-scale Russian invasion, Oleksandr voluntarily joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine, namely the 8th Regiment of Special Forces named after Prince Iziaslav Mstyslavych. He served as the company’s chief sergeant and had the call sign “Grek”. He participated in battles in Kyiv region, repelled the attacks of the occupiers in Luhansk region, liberated Kharkiv region from the invaders and defended the fortress city of Bakhmut.

He was waiting for victory, believed in it and made titanic efforts every day to bring it as soon as possible. But, unfortunately, on 4 June 2023, near the village of Hatyshche, Kharkiv region, 45-year-old Oleksandr Hrechanyk was killed…

The farewell ceremony for Oleksandr “Grek” Hrechanyk, the fallen Hero of Ukraine, has been attended by his family, friends and comrades-in-arms, as well as Major General Serhii Kryvonos.

Oleksandr was posthumously awarded the Order “For Courage”, III class.
