Oleksandr Popovchenko, a former football player and former player of a number of amateur clubs, was killed in a battle with a sabotage and reconnaissance group of Russians in the Sumy region.
Around 7 a.m., the occupiers tried to break through the state border in the Sumy region. The enemy opened fire on the border area of Shostka district with mortars, grenade launchers, machine guns and submachine guns. Together with his comrades, 44-year-old Popovchenko fought with a sabotage group of the enemy and was wounded mortally.
Chief Sergeant Oleksandr Popovchenko was an inspector of the border service of the second category, had 10 years of service experience in the department. His wife and two children survived him.
used to be a professional footballer. In the 2000/01 season, he played eight matches for Sumy Frunzenets in the Second League. Later he played at the level of the amateur championship of the Association of Amateur Football of Ukraine for Impuls (Shostka) – from 2003 till 2007; Spartak (Khlukhiv) – from 2011 till 2014; Veleten (Khlukhiv) – from 2015 till 2016; Druzhba (Sosnivka) in 2020.
