On November 2, 2022, Ukraine lost another brave defender — Pavlo Vedmid. A junior sergeant in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and a drone operator with the “Skala” Battalion, Pavlo was killed in action while performing a combat mission in the Kharkiv region. Until his final breath, he defended his homeland, directing fire against enemy positions and saving the lives of his comrades.
Born in 1990, Pavlo dedicated his life to sports and serving others. He was known as a talented bodybuilder and a skilled powerlifting coach who inspired many to achieve new heights. Under his guidance, his wife, Oksana Vedmid — a world and European powerlifting champion — earned her greatest achievements. Friends and colleagues remember him as a man with boundless energy, a kind soul, and a radiant presence. He had an extraordinary ability to motivate, uplift, and make the world around him a better place.
Pavlo stood out for his patriotism, courage, and unwavering devotion to his country. Long before Russia’s full-scale invasion, he harbored deep anger over its aggression in Donbas and grew frustrated when anyone in his native city of Dnipro referred to Russians as a “brotherly nation.”
On September 1, 2022, driven by a sense of duty and love for his country, Pavlo voluntarily joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine. As a drone operator, he carried out missions in some of the most dangerous areas of the front — near Bakhmut and along the Kharkiv region’s border. His efforts saved the lives of countless soldiers and inflicted significant losses on the enemy.
His death was an indescribable loss for his family, friends, and everyone who knew him. “Pavlo was bright and kind, loved life, believed in victory, and inspired others to fight for Ukraine,” his loved ones recall. “He lived fully, packing more into his 32 years than many do in a lifetime.”
Following Pavlo’s death, a petition on the website of Ukraine’s President called for him to be awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine. It quickly garnered the necessary 25,000 signatures. Posthumously, Pavlo Vedmid was awarded the Order of Courage, Third Class.
The memory of Pavlo Vedmid — a warrior, coach, friend, and mentor — will forever remain in the hearts of Ukrainians. Eternal glory to the Hero!
