Roman Buzinsky

“I am still playing chess because you, my friend, gave your life for Ukraine…” – these are the words of the Ukrainian chess community to memorize of the Hero Roman Buzinsky, who gave his life for the freedom of his homeland and its peaceful future.

He was born on January 20, 1995, in the village of Strikhivtsi, Khmelnytskyi region. At school, he was a very inquisitive and intelligent student. He won competitions in various subjects and chess tournaments. In 2010, he entered the college of Podilskyi State Agrarian and Technical University, where he continued to play chess. In addition, since childhood, Roman had another hobby – he was interested in history. Following his heart, in 2013 he continued his studies at the History Department of the Kamianets-Podilskyi Ivan Ohienko National University. He represented his university at various professional competitions and chess tournaments. After graduating from the university in 2018, he became a volunteer – helped rebuild housing for people after the occupation and took up running. He became an ultramarathoner and participated in charity races to help the Ukrainian army.

In September 2020, he started working as a history and geography teacher at a school. However, after the start of the full-scale Russian invasion, he quit his job and voluntarily joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Roman Buzinsky had been supposed to be missed near Rubizhne in Luhansk region since April 18, 2022. For 17 long months, his family and friends had been waiting for a miracle, which, unfortunately, didn`t happen. After long expectations, on September 26, 2023, Ukrainians bid farewell to the fallen Hero in his native Khmelnytskyi region… On October 28, 2023, a charity chess tournament in memory of the Hero Roman Buzinskyi was held in Kamianets-Podilskyi.
