War has claimed another young life. While defending Ukraine from Russian occupiers, Roman Zayets, a handball player for the “SKA-Lviv” team and a graduate of the Faculty of Pedagogical Education at Lviv State University of Physical Culture named after Ivan Bobersky, tragically lost his life on September 27, 2024, in combat in Donetsk Oblast.
Born on September 2, 1995, Roman graduated from the Brovary Higher School of Physical Culture in 2012. He then continued his studies in the Department of Sports and Recreational Games, specializing in handball. His sporting achievements are remarkable: a multiple-time winner of the Lviv region Universiade, a bronze medalist in the 2015 Ukrainian Universiade, and a silver medalist in the 2017 Ukrainian Universiade. As a member of the “SKA-Lviv” team, he played in the Ukrainian championship, showcasing exceptional skill and dedication to the sport.
Later, after joining the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Roman underwent training in Germany and fought as part of the 5th Separate Assault Kyiv Brigade of the Ground Forces. This military unit was formed in the spring of 2022, immediately after the Russian invasion. The brigade participated in battles near Lysychansk, Siversk, Vuhlehirske, Maiorsk, and fought in Bakhmut and its outskirts.
Roman was not only a talented athlete but also a true patriot, who defended his country to the last breath. His life is an example for future generations, and his self-sacrifice will never be forgotten.
Eternal memory and glory to the Hero!
