Warrior, patriot, athlete. A native of Kryvyi Rih, Serhii Karayvan dedicated his life to sports from an early age, becoming a Master of Sport in weightlifting. He was passionate about swimming and cycling and participated in the Invictus Games. His iron will and unbreakable spirit propelled him forward both in sports and in life.
In 2014, when the enemy first set foot on Ukrainian soil, Serhii voluntarily joined the ranks of Ukraine’s defenders. He fought in Ilovaisk and Debaltseve, was wounded, yet returned to duty. He served in the 17th Tank Brigade, later in the 94th Separate Mechanized Brigade, and since 2018, in the 10th Assault Brigade. As a reconnaissance officer and platoon commander, he rose to the rank of chief sergeant, demonstrating exceptional leadership and unwavering devotion to his homeland.
With the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Serhii once again stood in defense of his country. On March 5, 2022, he was killed in action near the village of Zakharivka in the Vyshhorod district of Kyiv region.
His comrades remember him as a man of indomitable character and a kind heart. “He always had a smile on his face, no matter what,” recalls Serhii’s brother. Friends and fellow soldiers write of him as a true warrior and a bright soul.
Serhii was part of the international Invictus Games community—competitions for combat veterans founded by Britain’s Prince Harry, who personally expressed his condolences, writing: “Our hearts are heavy knowing we have lost a member of our veteran community. He died defending his country.”
Serhii Karayvan was awarded the Medal for the Defense of the Native State, the Badge of the 10th Mountain Assault Brigade, the Defender of the Fatherland Medal, and the Badge of Honor. Posthumously, he was awarded the Order of Courage, 3rd Class. He is buried in Kryvyi Rih at the Alley of Glory. A memorial plaque in his honor has been installed at School No. 63, where he once studied.
Serhii Karayvan will forever be remembered by his family, friends, and all Ukrainians as a symbol of courage, honor, and self-sacrifice.
Eternal memory to the Hero! Glory forever!
