Gave his life for Ukraine… While defending his native Kharkiv region, a brave warrior and athlete, scout, and senior sergeant of the platoon of the 13th Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine “Khartia,” Vyacheslav Shymchuk (callsign “Did”) was killed on the front line.
A Master of Sports of Ukraine in orienteering, Vyacheslav repeatedly represented the Kharkiv region and Ukraine at national and international competitions. His high level of physical fitness, ability to navigate terrain quickly, endurance, and precise planning were not only the foundation of his sporting victories but also essential qualities for a scout.
After the start of the full-scale invasion, Vyacheslav joined the ranks of “Khartia.” He fought in the hottest spots—Stelmakhivka, Bakhmut, the Serebriansky forest—and later defended his native Kharkiv. His athletic skills played a key role in completing reconnaissance missions: the ability to read maps, navigate complex terrain, make quick decisions under extreme conditions, and work as part of a team.
Vyacheslav also actively trained his comrades—conducting exercises, teaching topography, navigation, tactical movement, and forest survival. His experience helped young soldiers better understand the combat environment and act with confidence.
On July 26, 2024, near the village of Lyptsi in the Kharkiv region, Vyacheslav Shymchuk’s combat group suddenly encountered an enemy sabotage and reconnaissance group. A close-range firefight broke out instantly, which became the Hero’s last.
For personal courage and selfless service in defending the state sovereignty of Ukraine, he was awarded the medal “For the Defender of the Homeland.” On February 26, 2025, Vyacheslav Shymchuk was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine with the presentation of the Order of the Golden Star.
On April 30, 2025, a memorial plaque was unveiled on the facade of Kharkiv School No. 73, which Vyacheslav graduated from.
He is remembered as a professional athlete, an experienced reconnaissance warrior, and a man who remained devoted to his cause until the end.
Eternal memory to the Hero and a deep bow from us all!
