On 5 May 2026, while carrying out a combat mission near the village of Sydorove in the Donetsk region, Ukrainian defender Ihor Hladkyi was killed — an officer, an athlete, and a Master of Sports of Ukraine in armwrestling. He was only 28 years old.
A native of the village of Davydiv in the Lviv region, he came to sport in 2021. Yet even within what seemed like such a short period of time, he managed to accomplish what others spend many years striving for. Through relentless hard work, discipline, and extraordinary strength of character, he earned the title of Master of Sports of Ukraine, became a multiple medalist of Ukrainian championships and cup competitions, and represented our country at international tournaments. Among athletes and coaches, he was known as a man of his word, unwavering character, and remarkable dedication.
From the very first days of the full-scale invasion, Ihor stood in defense of Ukraine as part of the 45th Separate Artillery Brigade. He walked a combat path from rifleman in a security company and sniper to commander of an artillery platoon. He carried out combat missions in the Zaporizhzhia, Bakhmut, and Lyman sectors, and took part in the battles for Klishchiivka, Siversk, and Chasiv Yar. As a Junior Sergeant, he personally commanded artillery crews that destroyed enemy equipment and occupying forces.
Ihor Hladkyi was awarded the Order “For Courage,” III Class, the medal “For Military Service to Ukraine,” the Ministry of Defense distinction “Cross of Missile Forces and Artillery,” along with other military honors.
Even in the midst of war, Ihor never abandoned sport — he trained whenever the opportunity arose, returned to competitions, and continued winning prize places. He stood firm under pressure both in sporting arenas and on the front line with equal confidence and resilience.
Ihor Hladkyi will be remembered as a strong athlete, a professional soldier, a dependable brother-in-arms, and a man who carried out his duty with honesty and dignity — until his very last breath.
Eternal memory to the Hero.
